Shop At Independet Bookstores
Yes, I love Orell Füssli as well but there are many independet bookstores in Zurich that deserve a visit as well. So if you want to support an independet bookstore and browsing through bookshelf you don’t find at your usual store, here come some suggestions:
- Vastela Books (Second Hand English Books)
- Buchhandlung im Volkshaus
- Paranoia City (Books and Magazines)
- Sammelpunkt (Comics and Mangas)
- Pile of Books (English Books only)
- Bücher-Broki (Second Hand)

Take a Yoga Class
Yoga is a popular sport in Zurich and there are so many studios. You can sign up for any Yoga class. There are also some classes right next to the lake or on rooftops and if you’re lucky you get an amazing view like this while doing something good for your body. I can wholeheartely reccomend the Yoga Class at Alma Club every Wednesday evening.

Visit the Succulent Plant Collection
This is a beautiful spot in Zurich not too many tourists know about so it’s still a hidden gem. From the main station you take Tram number 7 to Brunaustrasse. From there you need to walk about seven minutes towards the lake. The Succulent Plant Collection offers a variety of succulents from all over the planet. Little bonus: Entry is free.

Take a Scenic Boat Cruise
As long as you stay within the city, boat rides are relatively cheap and you can hop on with your public transport day pass. The most fun boat cruise ist from behind the Ländermueseum to Chinawiese. You will sit in a really flat boat and just see right above water levels.

Ride the Train Up to Uetliberg
There is a train that goes up to Uetliberg. From the main station is takes about … You will need to walk up for minutes but you will have amazin views over the whole city from up there. There is also a restaurant on top so you can get a gold drink while enjoying the view. During the month of December there is a Winter Market where you can get mulled wine and a cute souvenir.

Read in a Park
After you bought an interesting book in one of the many bookshops, grab some snacks in Migros or Coop, buy a cold drink and take public transport to the lakeside or a park to read. Good spots are: Lindenhof, Chinese Garden, and Botanical Garden. There are also plenty of other small and cozy parks with benches where you can relax all over the city.
Day Trips You Can Do Solo from Zurich
The train network in Switzerland is excellent and you can do a lot of small daytrips from Zurich. You could go to Lucerne, Rhine Falls (biggest waterfall in Europe), Mount Rigi, Saint Gallen, Berne, Winterthur or Stein am Rhein.
Trains to these cities and locations run multiple times an hour and connections are easy to catch from the main station. You can find every connection on the SBB website or App. If you lucky and you check your connection a couple of days before you might be able to buy a cheaper ticket.
Final Thoughts
Zurich is perfect for solo travelers. There are a lot of cool food spots and cafés where you can get tasty (and slightly expensive) food and beverages and just walk around the city to take the atmosphere in. Zurich can feel hectic in the business district but it’s also a city where you can slow down and feel calm among so much nature and green spots throughout the town. Since it’s such a safe city you don’t need to fear that your stuff gets stolen and can walk around the city independently and safely, even if you’re a woman.
