5 things you need to know before scuba diving

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOUR FIRST SCUBA DIVING LESSION

Getting my Scuba Diving Certificate is one of the coolest things I have ever done. I went into it knowing nothing about it so today I am telling you all the things I wish I knew beforehand. So you can be a litte bit more prepared than I was.

1. GETTING YOUR SCUBA DIVING CERTIFICATE IS EXPENSIVE

Depending on the country that you take your course in, this can differ of course. I did my PADI Open Water in Egypt and payed around 300 Euros. But this is not where your expenses stop. Every time you want to go diving, you need to be prepared to pay around 100 Euros/ Dollars. This adds up quickly.

2. YOU NEED TO STUDY A LOT

Scuba Diving is not just looking at some cool fishes (even tho that is a pretty nice reward). To get there you need to study the theory as well. And this takes a couple of days.

3. BUY YOUR OWN MASK

You have to spit into that mask. A lot. I felt a lot more comfortable with my own mask and snorkel. Yes, you can always rent a mask and snorkel but I did my course with my own mask (and rented all of the other equipment like a wetsuit amd fins) and I wouldn’t change it. I bought the cheapest mask and snorkel at Decathlon and they held up great. You can always upgrade your gear later if you decide scuba diving is something you want to persue.

4. YOU CAN ALWAYS CHANCE YOUR INSTRUCTOR

You need to be able to trust your scuba instructor with your life. If you don’t feel comfortable with this person, it’s best to voice your concerns early. Just so you know: It’s okay to feel like that, you don’t need to feel about it. Sometimes you just don’t match with another person. A good diving school will offer to change instructors if you tell them you that you don’t think it’s a good fit.

5. YOU CAN GET SEASICK – EVEN UNDER WATER

I am a person that gets seasick easily but I never thought it’s possible to get seasick under water. Don’t worry, your instructor will tell you what to do if you get seasick. Just know that it’s something that can happen.
